Change of BOE Meeting
With Graduation Season all in this month, we are getting ready to bid farewell to the great Class of 2024 in our school system. We have been told only a few of our seniors have applied, so we need to make sure all seniors and their parents are aware of this opportunity to earn Federal dollars to help your child go to college or university if that is the path they are following after graduation. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid is a form completed by current and prospective college students in the United States to determine their eligibility for student financial aid. FAFSA is the First Step to ALL Financial Aid. And with the Next NC Scholarship, most students from households with incomes of $80,000 or less will qualify for at least $3,000/year to attend a NC community college that covers all tuition and fees. For students planning to go to a UNC institution, they can get $5,000/year that covers more than half, if not all, tuition and fees. And for students going to a NC private college there is a state need-based scholarship for them, too. But it all starts with FAFSA! It is not too late, Seniors and their parents! Go ahead and fill the FAFSA application online as soon as possible! Our school counselors are a great source of support if help is needed in completing the application! Check out these websites for more information and to apply! https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa https://nextncscholarship.org/

National School Counseling Week
Mainland students, parents, community members!! Let's walk! Interested participants need to register by scanning the QR code. Once they have created a profile, they can then return to that page and “sign in.” Then they go to the challenges tab in the app (little trophy icon, second tab on the bottom) and find challenges to join. Of course, this one will be 'Walking Into Winter - Mattamuskeet School' You will also need to connect their devices, which will sync their steps from a wearable (Apple watch, Garmin, Fitbit, etc.) to their mobile device, or they can just use their mobile device. Let's all walk together to a much healthier lifestyle!

With Ms. Todd’s now vacant spot being a Democratic one, the Democratic Party of Hyde County was not able to appoint or recommend candidates at this time. Therefore, The Hyde County Board of Education is opening up a call for any resident of Ocracoke Island interested in serving as the Ocracoke representative on the Board of Education. We ask that you please send an email of interest to Dr. Melanie Shaver, mshaver@hyde.k12.nc.us by no later than this Friday, February 2nd. You will receive a confirmation of your submission. These interested citizens also need to plan to attend the next Board of Education meeting scheduled for Tuesday, February 6th at 5:00pm at either of the meeting sites (O.A. Peay School or Ocracoke School Commons) for an interview process conducted by the current board members so they may decide who will receive the favorable appointment.

October is National Principals' Month School principals are dedicated and empathetic leaders who create an environment that fosters learning, growth, and development. They constantly strive to improve the school experience for their students and put their needs first. They serve as a source of inspiration, motivation, and encouragement for the school community, preparing students for the challenges of the real world. Without school principals, the education system would not be as excellent as it is today. We should appreciate and thank them for their commitment to improving our schools. We are blessed to have Ms. Etheridge and Ms. Cole lead our schools. Their contributions do not go unnoticed!
