With Ms. Todd’s now vacant spot being a Democratic one, the Democratic Party of Hyde County was not able to appoint or recommend candidates at this time. Therefore, The Hyde County Board of Education is opening up a call for any resident of Ocracoke Island interested in serving as the Ocracoke representative on the Board of Education. We ask that you please send an email of interest to Dr. Melanie Shaver, email@example.com by no later than this Friday, February 2nd. You will receive a confirmation of your submission. These interested citizens also need to plan to attend the next Board of Education meeting scheduled for Tuesday, February 6th at 5:00pm at either of the meeting sites (O.A. Peay School or Ocracoke School Commons) for an interview process conducted by the current board members so they may decide who will receive the favorable appointment.

October is National Principals' Month School principals are dedicated and empathetic leaders who create an environment that fosters learning, growth, and development. They constantly strive to improve the school experience for their students and put their needs first. They serve as a source of inspiration, motivation, and encouragement for the school community, preparing students for the challenges of the real world. Without school principals, the education system would not be as excellent as it is today. We should appreciate and thank them for their commitment to improving our schools. We are blessed to have Ms. Etheridge and Ms. Cole lead our schools. Their contributions do not go unnoticed!

Staff, Parents and Students: As this school year soon comes to a close, we understand you need to make plans around the school calendar for next school year. At this point in time, the Board of Education has approved two different calendars drafts; one for Mattamuskeet School and Hyde Academy and the other one for Ocracoke School, but these calendars are not official. The hold up to make them so relies solely on the passing on House Bill HB163: AN ACT TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL FLEXIBILITY TO CERTAIN SCHOOL SYTEMS IN ADOPTING THE SCHOOL CALENDARS at the General Assembly in Raleigh, NC. We would still like to share a link to each calendar to help you plan out the school year. However, if you like your particular calendar, we do encourage you to contact you legislators and ask them to pass HB163. Please click on the links to access the calendar drafts: Mattamuskeet School & Hyde Academy: https://5il.co/1u29g Ocracoke School: https://5il.co/1u29f
