CHARACTER TRAIT SPOTLIGHT: RESPONSIBILITY
Each month, Superintendent Shaver and the Hyde County Board of Education recognize students and staff who demonstrate the character traits we want to see throughout our schools and community.
On our September Regular Meeting, we celebrated RESPONSIBILITY.
Responsibility means being dependable, prepared, and accountable for our choices and actions. In our school system, being responsible can look like arriving ready to learn or work, following through on commitments, taking ownership when mistakes happen, caring for our schools and one another, and doing what needs to be done even when no one is watching.
We are proud to recognize the following students and staff members who were nominated by their colleagues and educators for demonstrating RESPONSIBILITY:
MATTAMUSKEET SCHOOL
Konnor Parker — 12th Grade
Konnor demonstrates responsibility through leadership and service. As an FFA Regional Officer and SkillsUSA officer, he consistently supports his school and can be counted on to be prepared, dependable, take ownership of his actions, and do what is right.
Annalise Gibbs — PreK
Even our youngest learners can show tremendous responsibility! Annalise arrives each day ready to learn. From preparing her folder and cubby and participating in learning to completing classroom duties, cleaning her learning center, and taking care of her belongings, she demonstrates what it means to be responsible and prepared.
OCRACOKE SCHOOL
Jonah Reynolds — 7th Grade
When Jonah was absent due to illness, he respectfully contacted his teachers to ask about missed assignments and what he could begin working on. His initiative demonstrated responsibility for his own learning.
Camryn Lewis — 8th Grade
Camryn consistently arrives to class on time and prepared with the materials she needs. She uses her academic planner, works diligently on assignments, and approaches her responsibilities with a positive attitude.
Stephanie Flores Esparza — 11th Grade
Stephanie demonstrates responsibility through her daily choices and willingness to take accountability for her actions. She successfully balances academics, work, volunteerism, and athletics while continuing to make her grades a priority and supporting her peers.
Alice Burruss — K–5 Literacy Teacher/AIG Lead/Advanced Teacher Lead
Alice has taken on a new role this year with grace and dedication. Even while balancing numerous responsibilities, she continues to make time to check in with and support those around her.

Charmayne exemplifies responsibility through her dedication, organization, and commitment to supporting the district. Whether keeping everyone aware of important fiscal deadlines, arriving early, staying late, or ensuring critical work is completed, Charmayne consistently follows through—and does so with a cheerful and helpful disposition.
Congratulations to all of our Responsibility honorees! Thank you for showing us that responsibility isn't simply about completing a task, but more about being someone others can depend on.

Our monthly Character Trait recognitions begin with YOU! Nominations are submitted by school system employees through our online nomination form.
The Board and Superintendent plan to honor at each school up to:
Two students in PreK–5
Two student in grades 6–12
One staff member
And at Central Office:
One staff member
When more nominations are received than the number of available recognitions, Superintendent Shaver selects the honoree based on the information provided by the person submitting the nomination.
