Information for Parents

  • Math in the middle grades is challenging, but I try to make it engaging and fun for my students.  Students will be challenged daily as we work to increase math abilities and critical thinking skills.  There will be hands-on activities and projects throughout each unit.  Critical thinking skills are crucial to students success not only in the middle grades but also throughout high school; therefore it is imperative that students work to face the daily challenges that their courses present so as to build these skills to ensure future success.  Math classes will use technology daily to help students grow into 21st Century learners and to better prepare them for testing.  This will be a new concept for most students (and parents), so parent support is greatly appreciated.

Middle grades mathematics introduces students to many new concepts that build on skills gained in earlier years of instruction.  Therefore, it is imperative that students practice math daily to reinforce skills and to develop new ones.  At the end of each class, students will receive remediation or enrichment based upon their individual needs.  Any work that is assigned from this time is to be done in addition to regular course assignments.  It is intended to help students improve in areas of weakness and should be taken seriously.

To succeed in Math, students must know more than just the basics of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.  Students must develop critical reasoning skills and enhance reading and contextual clue comprehension.  This year's math classes will incorporate daily-to-weekly reading and writing assignments.  While there may not be homework each night, students should practice math nightly.  The only way to learn math is to do math!

Much of the math "work" will be completed digitally.  While the math itself will be done on paper, assignments will often be submitted in digital formats.  Tests will often be taken digitally as well.  This is because the benchmark and End of Grade assessments are delivered by computer and it is important for students to be accustomed to taking tests in this fashion.  If internet connectivity is an issue at home, as it is for most in this area, please have a flash drive in order to do work from home.

Communication is key.  Before falling behind, please tell your child to ask for help.  I will do my best to recognize when students are having difficulties, but be students should always be their own best advocates.  Encourage your child to express his or her needs and to ask for help.

Tutoring is available after school when prearranged, most Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:15- 4:30.

Please feel free to contact me with any thoughts, questions, or concerns.  I can be reached by email or by texting the Remind app until 8:00 pm unless otherwise notified.  I encourage you, as a parent, to reach out to me when you feel unable to help your child and to encourage your child to take advantage of the help that is offered.

Do not contact me on social media regarding school issues. I will not respond.

I look forward to another great year of fun and learning!
